Another All About Healthy Hair Protective Ponytail Style…….

IMG_0549

I am still sporting my Afro Puffs but only this time it is a single ponytail instead of a double puff power going on this week and I shampooed my hair as normal but I added a little Olive Oil and Coconut Oil with my mixture conditioner that I just let processed with a plastic cap for about an hour to let my body heat activate the opening of my cuticles wanted a slow deep penetrating treatment with the Olive Oil and Coconut Oil and after the conditioner was rinsed from my hair I then sprayed my Leave-In Conditioner Mixture onto my hair and proceeded to comb my hair up in a ponytail fashion to let it air dry in that form and after my hair air dried I applied my mixture of a hair pudding onto my hair and created my ponytail and then placed my scarf around my hair to hold it in place as my hair dried and after my hair dried I then placed my drawstring ponytail onto my molded up ponytail and here are the end results. Thanks for following me on my short relaxed hair journal.

My Honey, Sweet Almond Oil, and My Moisturizing Conditioner Mixture Homemade Hair Treatment

Here I am chilling after just finishing with my hair treatment of 1/4C honey, 1Tbs sweet almond oil, and a 1/2C of my moisturizing conditioner mixture. I first used my water bottle to spray mist my hair because I just wanted it damp and not totally saturated dripping wet with water, I then applied my treatment to my hair after I completely mixed all the ingredients together which turned out to have a creamy texture and then I proceeded to add a plastic cap on as I let it set and processed for about 20 minutes as the plastic cap was used to reserve my body heat as it helps to open up my cuticles in order for the homemade hair treatment to penetrate into my hair cuticles. After sitting for twenty minutes I shampooed my hair as normal with my mixture of shampoos that I am experimenting with right now to see how they will combine together and work for my hair and after the shampoo and rubbed some Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum through my hair and then proceeded to spray on my mixture of a leave-in conditioner onto my hair and wrapped it around like a wrap and let it air dried after it completely air dried I bumped it with my flat irons on low heat about 350c and  spray misted it with my Kera Care Liquid Sheen Mist afterwards and here is the end results of my finished hair treatment mixture and styled hair and below you will see how I mixed and applied the mixture to my hair and thank you for visiting and viewing my blogger All About Healthy Hair.

All About Healthy Hair

I tried an at home Deep Protein Treatment on my hair consisting of an egg, vinegar, yogurt, Joico Reconstruct Conditioner, and Coconut Oil left it on for 25 minutes then rinsed that out and followed up with a good penetrating Moisturizing Conditioner to restore moisture back into my hair after the protein treatment and I tell you the results were very good I mean that treatment left my hair feeling soft, silky, shiny, and healthy looking I must and will make this a part of my monthly regimen for my chemically, dry, porous, color treated, and relaxed hair. So here is a quick video glimpse of my finished results after the protein treatment that I recommend to any one with hair as damaged as my hair is because the results are excellent you must try it to believe it.

Your Hair & Health is more connected than you may think.......

All About Healthy Hair

Your blood and lymph vessels are your energy and nutrient supply line to the skin and hair follicles and this supply will be cut off or disconnected from your hair follicle when it reaches the Catagen Phase Stage. Image source www.hairtransplantation.feriduni.com/en/hair-loss-and-alopecia/hair-biology/hair-growth-cycle

If you check out my squidoo lens www.squidoo.com/hair-beauty-and-health you will find more information informing you on how your hair, body, and health is more connected than you may know or realize this is so because the human body blood and lymph vessels are the energy & nutrient supply line to the human body skin and hair follicles. Until the time that the Catagen Phase reaches the blood vessels nourish the cells in the hair bulb which forms the base of the hair follicle and the hair bulb has living cells that divide and grow to build the hair shaft as it deliver hormones that modify your hair growth as well as structure at different of life during the hair growth cycle phase pattern.

The main components for regulating as well as promoting hair growth are your Hair Follicle, Dermal Papilla,  and Dermal Sheath and they have structures that complement each other to help keep your hair growing as well as functioning normal and healthy. These structures are your Sebaceous Glands: which produces the human body natural conditioner called "sebum," Arrector Pili Muscle: which is a soft muscle that is responsible for making your hair stand up by raising the hair to catch the heat your warm stem cells gives off as part of a conjunction with this muscle, and the Capillaries: which are tiny blood vessels connected at the bottom of your hair bulb that provides the essential nutrients for your hair shaft which is the hair itself which is made up of three layers of dead hard protein called "Keratin" which is formed at the top of the hair bulb. Image source www.nileherb.blogspot.com/2008/09/hair-radiant-99.html the three layers of skin image.

What is the Hair Growth Cycle Pattern?????

All About Healthy Hair

Hair undergoes a cyclical pattern of birth the (Anagen Phase), growth the (Catagen Phase), and death the (Telogen Phase) before the removal of the old hair and the life of the new hair appear.

  • The Antagen Growth Phase  last anywhere from two to eight years in women depending on the individual and during this phase the hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month while the potential length of grow is determined by the length. Long before the hair breaks the surface of the skin activity in the hair follicle marks the beginning of the Anagen Phase where the dermal papilla forms and the follicle grows 3x's it's resting length.
  • The Catagen Growth Phase is set off by a signal from your body that is sent out when the Anagen Phase ends this will begin the cycle of the Catagen Phase. This phase is also known as the transitional phase because it allows the hair follicle to renew itself in a way and during this time (which can last for as long as two weeks), the hair follicle shrinks from disintegration and the papilla detaches and (rests) cutting the hair strand off from it's nourishing blood supply so that it can set the stage for the formation of a new follicle.
  • The Telogen Growth Phase is when ten to fifteen percent of the hairs on an individual's head is in this phase of growing at any given time and this phase can last up to six weeks but the hair and follicle remains dormant anywhere from one to four months. This stage of phase causes the normal hair loss known as shedding when the preceding hair strand is pushed up and out by the new growing strand. At the end of this phase of growth hair cycle pattern the hair follicle re-enters into the growth phase of the cycle again (Anagen Phase) where the derma papilla and the tubular base of the follicle join forces again to create the cycle of the beginning of a new hair life that is to begin to form as the Telogen Growth Phase is complete.

The relative duration of these phases varies with the individuals age, nutritional status, hormonal factors and other physiologic and pathologic factors of each individual.

The hair structure consists of a Cuticle, Cortex, & Medulla which makes up the hair shaft

The Human Hair Structure

  1. The Hair Cuticle: is formed from dead cells which form scales that gives the hair shaft strength and the hair cuticle does the best job of providing protection. The hair cuticle is the first line of defense against all forms of damage because it is responsible for much of the mechanical strength of the hair fiber, as well as controls the water content of the fiber. Much of the shine that makes healthy hair glow flawless is due to the hair cuticle. The hair cuticle is often damaged by excessive mechanical manipulation such as brushing, using heat like curling tools, or chemical processing such as (texturizers, perms, relaxers, or color) and everyday elements like the sun, wind, or rain.
  2. The Hair Cortex: makes up majority of the hair shaft, determines the hair color and whether your hair will be straight or curly, and the hair cortex is responsible for the strength, thickness, and flexibility of the hair. When you see split ends then you know that your first line of defense the hair cuticle is damaged the fibers of the cortex begins to unravel causing the hair to become dry, brittle, and prone to tangles and split ends. When the hair cortex is damaged then it is time for a protein treatment which is designed to add strength and elasticity to your hair.
  3. The Hair Medulla:  is the inner most layer, responsible for 90% of the total weight of the hair, and is composed of large, loosely connected keratinized cells. In human hair the medulla may be as much as 1/3 of the diameter of the hair fiber and the formation of the medulla cells can be continuous, discontinuous, or fragment. In coarse hair the diameter is usually continuous or fragmental and where as in fine hair it appears to be discontinuous or absent all together. This is the layer of the hair where chemical changes takes place when you change the color of your hair, have a permanent wave, or relaxer chemical service.

Understanding what hair is composed of....

To understand what hair is you must first understand the ingredients that hair is composed of and what happens to those ingredients when the bonds are broken physically and chemically. This image is a good informative breakdown of a hair strand provided by
http://www.vasudasalon.com/Pages/VasudaSalonEducatesClientonHairandHairTexture.aspx
The Hair Strand Defined
Atom:
the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element, consisting of a nucleus containing combinations of neutrons and protons and one or more electrons bound to the nucleus by electrical attraction; the number of protons determines the identity of the element.

Molecule:
the smallest physical unit of an element or compound, consisting of one or more like atoms in an element and two or more different atoms in a compound.

Helix Coil:
A helix is a shape formed by a smooth curve. A helix is one such three-dimensional shape formed by large molecules, and it has an important role in biology. Precise coiling of the protein keratin allowed hydrogen bonds to form and stabilize the structure. the helical structure helps to maintain the shape of the molecule and gives it much more stability than when it is unwound.

Micro Fibers:
Microfiber consists of very fine threads of polyester and polyamide (nylon) that combine to form a single thread. Microfibers are so thin (100 times thinner than a single strand of human hair) that when they are woven together they create a surface area 40 times more than that of a regular fiber – creating an expanded surface area with dramatically enhanced absorbing power due to the capillary action of the fine threads. Microfiber is traditionally defined as a fiber with a denier of less than one. Denier is a measure of thinness of fiber and is the weight in grams of a continuous fiber of 9,000 meters. Microfiber has two polymers. Polyester is lyophilic, or has an affinity to oil, so that oil and grease adhere directly to the fibers. Polyamide is hydrophilic, which means it has an affinity to water.

Cortical Fiber:
Cortical cells constitute the bulk of a hair, and it is the cortex that gives a hair fiber its eventual shape, resilience, elasticity and curl. Within each cortical cell are bundles of hair protein called fibrils, running parallel to the fiber axis, and between the fibrils is a softer material called the matrix.  The cortex may contain cortical fusi, pigment granules, and/or large oval-to-round-shaped structures called ovoid bodies. Cortical fusi in are irregular-shaped airspaces of varying sizes. They are commonly found near the root of a mature human hair, although they may be present throughout the length of the hair. In the living portion of the hair root the fusi are filled with fluid; as the hair grows and dries out, air replaces the fluid.

Macro Fibers:

Macro Synthetic Fibers are the new generation of synthetic fibers. Currently all of the Macro Synthetic Fibers being marketed are classified as polyolefins. A Polyolefin is an umbrella name for a number of ‘polys’ like polypeptide. The defining physical properties of Macro Synthetic Fibers are length (1 ½”-2 ½”), configuration (thicker strands) and dosage (3-9 lbs/yd3).

Cuticle Scales:
Scaly, protective layers to shield the inner parts of each hair strand. Hair cuticle is hard and transparent. Each individual cuticle overlaps another like shingles, stretching toward the end lengths of each piece of hair. Dead cells, which form scales, form the cuticle. Aside from protecting the inner layers of the hair, the cuticle also controls how much water can enter the hair. The shiny luster found on the hair of many people can be attributed to their hair cuticle cells.

Polypeptide Chains:

A chain of amino acids joined together through peptide bonds.  There are three main side bonds, two of which are physical in nature – meaning that they are broken and reformed through physical changes in the state of the hair. The two physical side bonds are salt bonds and hydrogen bonds. Both of these physical bonds can be broken using an application of heat and/or moisture, and reform with cooling and drying. This is what allows the hair to styled to add curl or straighten the hair from its natural state. The physical side bonds account for 2/3rds of the hair’s strength and elasticity in spite of the fact that they are the weakest bonds found in the hair. This is due to the sheer number of salt and hydrogen bonds in the hair.

The other main side bond is a chemical side bond – so named because it requires a chemical reaction to break or reform – and it is called the disulfide bond because it links two polypeptide chains via cysteine sulfur atoms forming cystine (an oxidized form of cysteine). The disulfide bonds are the strongest of the side bonds although they are weaker than the peptide and polypeptide bonds.

This is a image from http://www.fotosearch.com/u23911490  is of a hair strand inside of the follicle where hair begins it's journey.

Hair Strand:
Hair is a filamentous biomaterial that grows from follicles found in the dermis. Hair is one of the defining characteristics of mammals. The human body, apart from areas of glabrous skin, is covered in follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair. Most common interest in hair is focused on hair growth, hair types and hair care, but hair is also an important biomaterial primarily composed of protein, notably keratin. Attitudes towards hair, such as hairstyles and hair removal, vary widely across different cultures and historical periods, but it is often used to indicate a person's personal beliefs or social position, such as their age, gender, or religion.

Hair Follicle:
A hair follicle is a part of the skin, which grows a hair by packing old cells together. Attached inside the top of the follicle are sebaceous glands, which are tiny sebum-producing glands in almost all skin except on the palms, lips and soles of the feet. The thicker the hair, the more the number of sebaceous glands there are.
Also attached to the follicle is a tiny bundle of muscle fiber, called the arrector pili, which is responsible for causing the follicle lissis to become more perpendicular (upright) to the surface of the skin. The muscle area can also cause the follicle to stick up slightly above the nearby skin (piloerection) with a pore incased with skin oil. This process results in goose bumps (or goose flesh). Stem cells are at the junction of the arrector and the follicle, and are principally responsible for the ongoing hair production during a process known as the Anagen stage.
The average growth rate of healthy hair follicles on the scalp is nearly 0.5 inches (13 mm) per month.

I found this chart online at http://jlhmajorproject.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/hair-types/  and had to share it because it is a perfect chart outlining your hair type, wave pattern, and images of a damaged to healthy hair follicle. You must understand your hair type, texture, and healthiness in order to better treat your hair strands with the proper hair care treatment.

Hair Type
Your hair type is a combination of three factors:
  1. the condition of your scalp meaning that your scalp may be dry, oily, or flaky
  2. the characteristic of your hair meaning if it is fine, frizzy, coarse, curly, wavy, straight, or chemically treated.
  3. your environment such as your city or country, your air conditioned home or work office, and whether your climate is hot or humid, wet and windy, or hot and dry.

Hair Texture

Your hair texture is usually defined as fine, medium coarse, wiry, or frizzy depending on the hair diameter and there are four hair texture ranges and according to Mizani website there are eight types and your hair texture can range from thin, medium, or thick density and it can be straight, curly, kinky (tightly coiled), or wavy and your hair texture can be healthy, normal, oily, dry, physically or chemically damaged, or a combination of hair texture.
